PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating material being free from the bleed out of a deterioration-preventive component from a coated film or the occurrence of a rough coated surface, and excellent in mechanical stability and dispersibility of a pigment, resin beads and silica, and giving a coated film excellent in initial glazing, the resistance to climate and warm water. SOLUTION: The water-based coating material contains emulsion particles (A) composed of 40-88 pts.mass of (a) a particular ethylenic unsaturated monomer unit, 6-40 pts.mass of (b) an ethylenic unsaturated monomer unit shown by a general formula (I), 5-20 pts.mass of (c) an ethylenic unsaturated monomer unit shown by a general formula (II) or (III) and 1-10 pts.mass of (d) a particular reactive emulsifier unit.
