PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surfactant having oil-separating property and suppressed frothing and iron ion elution property, and a flocculant, a water-soluble processing oil, a water-soluble detergent, a water-treating agent, etc., each containing the surfactant. SOLUTION: The invention provides a new surfactant expressed by general formula (1) (R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>are each hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; and n is an integer of 4-400), and a flocculant, a water-soluble processing oil, a water-soluble detergent and a water-treating agent each containing the surfactant.
