PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device in which a sensor for detecting the concentration of oxygen is accurately calibrated at sufficient frequencies without delaying the start of an engine. SOLUTION: The control device 1 for the engine 2 having the sensor 24 for detecting the concentration of oxygen in exhaust gases comprises: a scavenging means 12 for filling the periphery of the sensor with the atmosphere by scavenging the exhaust gases in the exhaust system of the engine; a scavenging control means 38a operating the scavenging means after the engine is stopped, a sensor control means 38b operating the sensor after the engine is stopped; and a calibrating means 38c calibrating the sensor based on the output of the sensor in the state of being filled with the atmosphere therearound by the scavenging means after the engine is stopped.
