BEAM BLADE WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY HAVING AN AIRFOIL

A beam blade wiper assembly (22) including a rubber wiping element (26) and an elongated beam (38) having first and second longitudinal ends (44, 46). The wiper assembly (22) also includes an airfoil (54) having an attachment portion (60) and an upper portion (62) extending between first and second distal ends (56, 58). The attachment portion (60) includes a flat rib (64) and a pair of legs (66, 68) adapted to operatively engage the rubber wiping element (26). The upper portion (62) includes a solid base (76) having a leading edge (78) that extends from the base (76) toward the wiping element (26). The base (76) and the rib (64) define a space (82) that receives the elongated beam (38). The base (76) and the elongated beam (38) define a cavity (83) that provides flexibility between the upper portion (62) and the attachment portion (60) during wiper operation. The upper portion (62) further includes a spoiler (72) that extends from the base (76) in a manner opposite to the leading edge (78).
