Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] The activity of a palladium reducing catalyst is controlled by treating the catalyst with liquid formic acid at a temperature of at least 100‹F., preferably at its boiling point. The activity of fresh catalyst is reduced and that of spent catalyst at least partially restored. The formic acid is then removed by evaporation or distillation. The catalyst may contain 0.05% to 1 % by weight palladium supported on charcoal, and may be used in the purification of aromatic polycarboxylic acids, for example terephthalic acid; containing 4-carboxybenzaldehyde.</p> |
