1,150,506. Metal oxides. VARTA A.G. 30 Jan., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 4496/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Metal oxide particles of spherical shape are produced by feeding liquid metal, such as Pb, Cd, Ag, Hg or Cu, to vibrating plate 5 and atomizing it in an inert or reducing atmosphere 7, then passing the metal mist produced through an oxidizing atmosphere in zone 8. Plate 5 is vibrated at from 15 kilocycles to 5 megacycles per second, suitably by rotatable vibrational oscillator 4. Burning of H or a hydrocarbon fed through conduit 6 heats plate 5 and maintains atmosphere 7, while air, air enriched with O, O or saturated steam may be passed upwards through zone 8. Turbulence may be induced in these gases and the fall of the particles through them regulated. Preferably the temperature in zone 8 is between 100‹ C. and the vaporization temperature of the atomized metal. A cooling zone may follow zone 8 and the solidified particles may be collected by funnel 10. The powder has a particle diameter between 1 and 50 microns, all the particles lying between Œ20% of a mean value. |
