A weft 1 is pushed into a jet picking nozzle 8 by a tube 20 through which air is intermittently ejected to assist in picking. The air through the tube 20 may be the main source of air and may include a droplet of water to wet the weft to prevent unravelling. In Figure 4 the tube 20 is notched at its end where it engages the weft, the main air stream is supplied through its bore, secondary air through the annular gap between the nozzle 8 and tube 20 and the water through a port 27. In Figure 2 air is supplied through an annular gap 14, through the tube 20 when a port 22 coincides with a pipe 23 during the tubes movement and tertiary air is drawn in through a second annular gap 16. In Figure 5 the nozzle cooperates with a suction operated storage tube 7 and, with valves 32, 34 closed by air pressure, air is admitted to chambers 33. When the pressure in feed lines 17a is relieved the pressure of air in the chambers 33 will lift the valves 32 and measured quantities of air will be available for by the nozzle 8 and tube 20 when its port coincides with opening 23. In Figure 1 (not shown) the weft from a reel (2) is supplied to continously rotating feed rolls (3), (4) which pass it to a suction operated storage tube (6) and the combined storage tube and picking nozzle 7.
