摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion film which is capable of enhancing the efficiency of using light for a display such as liquid crystal display device, has a high luminance improving effect particularly in reflective and transflective liquid crystal display elements and is excellent in productivity, to provide a manufacturing method of the polarization conversion film, to provide a polarization element of which the light transmittance is enhanced by using the polarization conversion film, and to provide a liquid crystal display device of which the luminance is enhanced by using the polarization conversion film. SOLUTION: The polarization conversion film comprises: a polarization separation layer of separating incident light into two linearly polarized light rays of which the electric field vectors are orthogonally crossed to each other; and a polarization conversion layer of converting each of the polarization states of the linearly polarized light rays, wherein the polarization conversion layer contains a discotic liquid crystalline compound which is obliquely oriented with respect to a film surface. The manufacturing method of the polarization conversion film is also provided in the invention. Therein, such an embodiment that the polarization separation layer has a prism structure and the surface of the prism structure is covered with material having birefringence and such an embodiment that the polarization separation layer comprises a birefringent diffraction grating are preferably used.
