The invention relates to a method and device for producing hydroxides or aluminium oxides from metallic aluminium by oxidising in an aqueous medium, in particular for producing boehmite- and bayerite-shaped aluminium hydroxides. Said invention also relates to producing hydrogen by a chemical aluminium and water interaction. Contrary to known methods, the inventive method uses aluminium and water only, whose interreaction is carried out at the predetermined ratios of the fine aluminium powder to water in suspension supplied to a reactor, wherein the reactor operation is controlled by modifying the quantity of the aluminium powder-water suspension introducible into the reactor in unit time and by the aluminium powder quantity introducible into water within a defined limit in unit time, wherein the ratio between the aluminium powder and water in said suspension defines the shape a hydroxide or aluminium oxide obtainable at the output. An automated control system based on the CM 1820M KP2.14 controller is used for guaranteeing the determined reaction process conditions and obtaining the required-shaped product.
