PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method in which detection precision of a pattern having a complicated shape can be maintained and improved. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes a reading means for reading a document, output by itself, having an image pattern and a detection means for detecting a basic pattern included in the image pattern that the document read by the reading means has, and includes a configuration for designating a designated parameter that is designated when creating an image pattern related to the read image pattern, to a basic pattern generation means. Thus, since a designated parameter to be designated for generating a basic pattern that the present image processing apparatus can detect, can be easily acquired and designated, detection precision of a pattern having a complicated shape can be easily maintained and improved.
