PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of not only projecting a high-quality high-luminance image but also accurately projecting a high-contrast image if necessary. SOLUTION: In a high-contrast mode, a liquid crystal light valve 45 is arranged at an operation position on an optical path, whereby luminance modulation and image information modulation are respectively performed by first and second optical modulation parts 40 and 70, and then the high-contrast color image is projected to a screen. Meanwhile, in a high-luminance mode, an optical path compensating member 49 is arranged at the operation position on the optical path instead of the liquid crystal light valve 45, whereby the image information modulation is performed only by the second optical modulation part 70, and then the high-luminance color image is projected to the screen.
