A heat treatment oven, for e.g. metal components, has a fist main section in which the workpiece temperature is raised to a first process temperature, followed by a second section in which the workpiece temperature is maintained at a second process temperature or temperature range. The second stage incorporates a tempering chamber with a highly reflective wall lining made of a composite material. The work piece temperature is maintained essentially by reflection of its own radiated heat.
