An embossing machine for the mechanical customizing of a substrate for an identity card, comprising: means such as a drum carrying a plurality of die and matrix pairs which can be operated to form strings of symbols on a surface of a substrate for a card ; means for activating a die and matrix pair positioned in the embossing position; positioning means for positioning predetermined die and matrix pairs in a time sequence in the said embossing position, and a control unit for controlling the said activation means and the said positioning means. The said control unit controls the said activation means in such a way as to operate them in a time sequence which depends on the distance each predetermined die and matrix pair will have to travel to reach the embossing position.
