FIRE RESISTANT I-BEAMS

A fire resistant structural component and method of manufacture are described, together with intumescent coatings for the structural component. The intumescent coating comprises melamine or a derivative thereof present in an amount in the range 5 to 15wt%, a source of carbon present in an amount in the range 4 to 15wt%, an acid source and an inorganic char strengthening agent. Also described is a software design tool which allows the parameters defining the design of the beam to be adjusted to ensure the load bearing performance of the beam while also allowing the thickness of intumescent coating to be reduced. The reduced thickness intumescent coating has a number of advantages in improving the efficiency of manufacture and use of the fire resistance structural element in construction projects.
