PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for detecting a temperature T<SB>O</SB>of a long-distance object (104). SOLUTION: A V(T<SB>O</SB>, T<SB>A</SB>) Look-up table (300) in which an output voltage of an infrared sensor is related a temperature sensed by the infrared sensor is stored in a memory (116). The output voltage of the temperature sensor corresponding to a temperature T<SB>A</SB>near the infrared sensor is determined (202). Further, the temperature T<SB>A</SB>near the infrared sensor and a first voltage V(T<SB>A</SB>, T<SB>REF</SB>) as a function of a reference temperature T<SB>REF</SB>are determined (204). A temperature T<SB>O</SB>of the object and a second voltage V(T<SB>O</SB>, T<SB>REF</SB>) as a function of the reference temperature T<SB>REF</SB>are determined (206), by combining the determined voltage output of the temperature sensor and the first voltage.
