PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out a nonlinear transformation of a particle signal, without having to use analog nonlinear transducers. SOLUTION: An apparatus is equipped with a particle signal detecting section which converts the characteristics of two or more particles into analog particle signals; an A/D converter section which converts obtained analog particle signals digitally and outputs resultant signals; a nonlinear transforming section which transforms a signal x obtained by the A/D converter section by using a nonlinear function y=f(x); a calculating section which calculates the feature parameters of the particles from a transformed value y; and an outputting section for outputting a calculated result. The nonlinear transforming section previously stores a reference table, representing values calculated with the function y=f(x), where x is varied over a prescribed range, in order to carry out the nonlinear transformation by using the reference table.
