<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color tone confirming method and apparatus before printing by a printer, a platemaking method, and a pattern color tone control method of the printer capable of confirming coloring before execution of printing so as to prevent print failure thereby capable of suppressing occurrence of brokes. <P>SOLUTION: The color tone confirming method and apparatus acquires a device profile of the printer used for printing, acquires a device profile of a simulating print tool, converts dot area rate data k, c, m, y of platemaking data into color coordinates (L*a*b*) by using the device profile of the printer after acquiring the platemaking data, outputs the color coordinates (L*a*b*) converted by using the device profile of the simulating print tool and a density in response to densities R, G, B, and discriminates whether or not the coloring of the output is within a permissible range.
