The buttonhole sewing machine has a buttonhole cutter (16) with a cutting blade (26) working with a cutter block. A cutter drive (19) moves the cutting blade and cutting block in relation to each other, with a variable cutting force. It uses a number of linear drives, switched in parallel to each other, and operated selectively by pneumatic forces. The linear drive is a multi-chamber cylinder, with a piston in each chamber, mounted at a common piston rod.
