In a method of mixing reacting, spray drying &c. a gas, liquid or particulate solid with a carrier gas the apparatus comprises a chamber of circular cross-section having an inlet 2 at one end for the carrier gas and an outlet 7 at the other, and widening from the inlet to a maximum diameter and then narrowing conically to the outlet; and means (which may be spiral passages or guides) outside the inlet for rotating the carrier gas. The gas flows in an expanding spiral in the zone 3 and thereafter in a contracting one, creating a zone of reduced pressure in the neighbourhood of the rotation axis 4 whereby part of the gas flow recirculates along the axis forming zones 5 of intense turbulence between the outward and return flows. The material to be treated is injected at either end axially as at 6. The means for rotating the carrier gas may be a tangentially fuelled circular or annular combustion chamber under or surrounding the mixing chamber (see Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
