Dimethylindans are produced according to the formula:- in which R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 is methyl or ethyl and R3 is propyl or isopropyl except that when R1 is methyl the dialkyl benzene should not be p-ethylcumene, in the presence of an acidic catalyst at - 30 DEG to 150 DEG C. Suitable catalysts are 75-96% sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acids, hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride hydrate. The products may be hydrogenated to form jet fuels or acetylated to obtain odorants.
