A mechanism for protecting an internal combustion engine from damage from excessive speeds of revolution. The mechanism is used in a vehicle having a driven wheel connected to the engine via a clutched manual transmission with a manually operable clutch control (10). The mechanism has a detector (21, 22, 23) for detecting a condition in which the engine is decoupled from the driven wheel by the clutch and a combination of driven wheel speed and a manually selected gear ratio would result in an excessive speed of revolution of the engine if the clutch was closed to couple the engine and the driven wheel. Decoupling means (17) decouples the clutch control from the clutch when the said condition is detected by the detector (21, 22, 23). |
