[Also in Division D1] A vacuum-controlled automatic laundry machine (see Division D1) has a rotatable container with a closure member opening and closing of which actuates a valve so that rotation of the container is stopped when the closure member is opened and permitted when it is closed. Lid valve 66 has a stationary reading head with openings 272, 274 at one level and openings 276, 278 at different levels and a movable member 280, Fig. 13, spring-biased vertically to an upper position and pushed down to a lower position when the lid is closed. A T-shaped channel 284 in member 280, Fig. 12, connects openings 274, 276, 278, in the upper position, to connect the brake actuator 286 to the atmosphere through openings 278 and 276 so that the brake is applied to the rotatable container. In the lower position, openings 272, 274 are connected to apply vacuum to brake actuator 284 and opening 278 is closed to maintain a vacuum in this actuator to release the brake. Actuator 224 pivots a lever 250 carrying an idler pulley 248 engaging a V-belt 246, Fig. 5, which also passes over pulley 461 driving variable speed transmission 44 and over variable pulley 50 driven by motor 52. Movement of pulley 248 causes an increase or decrease in the tension on belt 246 and either forces the flanges 225, 226 of pulley 50 further apart or allows them to come together and so decreases or increases the speed at which pulley 461 is driven.
