[Also in Division F1] The crank-case 17 of a hermetically sealed motor-driven compressor comprising piston 28 reciprocated in a cylinder block 15 by the eccentric portion 29 of a vertical crank-shaft 30 is maintained at a higher pressure than the enclosing casing 12, 13 by a fan 105 rotatable with the crank-shaft, whereby lubricant is expelled from the crank-case 17 into the annular sump space between the block 15 and the casing 12, 13. The fan 105 is in the form of a hollow annulus, Fig. 2, divided into sectorshaped compartments 111a, 111b by radial partitions 110 and is secured to the crank-shaft 30 by a sleeve 106. Suction gas within the casing 12, 13 enters the compartments 111a through an inner ring of apertures 114 in the upper wall of the annulus and is discharged through an outer ring of apertures 116 in the lower wall which communicate through a passage 120 with the crank-case 17. Lubricant is drawn from the sump through an opening 84 in a thrust bearing 83 and is forced through longitudinal passages 90 in the crank-shaft leading to crankshaft main bearings 80, 100, 102 and crankbearings 92-95. Any lubricant which spills from the upper main bearing 100 flows down the inside of the sleeve 106 where it gains access through inlets 118 to two of the fan compartments 111b through ports 118 and is expelled through the passage 120 back to the crank-case. Gas is admitted to the compressor cylinders through ports 70 and is discharged to an annular baffle chamber 56.
