<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion shift fiber suitable for wavelength division multiplexing transmission of a wide band including an S-band. <P>SOLUTION: The optical fiber which has a dispersion value of 2≤D≤8 (ps/nm/km) in a range of from 1,400 to 1,700 nm in wavelength and in which the wavelength dispersion is made to have at least one extreme value in this wavelength region is constituted. Such optical fiber is realized by selection of refractive index profiles of four or five layers. Wide-band transmission is made possible and distributed Raman amplification at the S-band is made possible by the optical fiber. The dispersion value 2 to 8 (ps/nm/km) controls an FMW and can also control the cumulative dispersion and therefore, there is no need for a dispersion compensator. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
