The device has a measurement unit for carrying out a measurement on a sample. A microprocessor is provided for the control of the measurement unit. A display unit is provided for displaying the measurement results and a control element, which enables the user to enter data or control commands. The hand-held analysis device is configured so that the actuation of the command element puts it in a selection status in which a setting mode (F1,F2,F3,F4) of the device is selected by the command elements (1,2,3).
