Asymmetric (27) and axisymmetric (51) prostheses for replacement of the radial head (23) are shown which are designed to smoothly interengage with the annular ligament (73) of the radius (13) and effectively allow a patient to recover normal functioning of the forearm. These prostheses (27, 51) have head (29, 53), collar (31, 55) and stem (33, 57) sections, and the undersurface (45, 65) of the head (29, 53) which surrounds the collar (31, 55) provides a shoulder which is excellently gripped by the annular ligament (73) through which the prosthesis (27, 51) is inserted during implantation, assuring achievement of the desired juxtaposition between the periphery of the prosthesis head (29, 53) and the radial notch (25) of the ulna (15). In the asymmetric embodiment (27), shaping the head (29) to provide a proximal surface of generally oval cross-section having an offset concave surface (35) and a medial region (41) of greater thickness offers particular advantages.
