Harvested plant material is milled and mixed with water solution added with a base e.g. sodium hydroxide. The mixture is packed into a vessel where water is passed through to extract the nicotine from the plant. The fibers are removed from the nicotinized broth further processed to purify the nicotine. This separates the nicotine and fiber from the tobacco material which is further exposed to a subset of washing steps with alkaline and acid to remove unsuitable components within it. Nicotine comprising less than 0.1 mu g nitrosamines/mg is obtained. An independent claim is included for the method of producing a nicotine product.
