A method and an apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to improve color representation performance by radiating at least two color lights to an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel. An LCD panel(102) includes red, blue, green, and white sub-pixels. A data converter converts 3-color input data to 4-color input data. A data driver(104) converts the 4-color input data to respective image signals, and supplies the result to the sub-pixels. A gate driver(106) supplies scan pulses to the respective sub-pixels. A timing controller(108) arranges the 4-color input data for one frames to form 4-color input data for at least three sub-frames and supplies the result to the data driver. The timing controller generates a sub-frame control signal corresponding to the respective sub-frames. A backlight unit(140) irradiates light to the LCD panel by using at least five colors of LEDs(Light Emitting Diodes). A backlight controller(120) controls the backlight unit according to the 3-color input data and the sub-frame control signal.
