An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to reduce the light leakage, which is generated at a position where an alignment controlling protrusion is disposed, by forming a light shielding layer on the alignment controlling protrusion. An LCD has an LCD panel consisting of a first substrate having a pixel electrode, a second substrate having a composite electrode(204), and a liquid crystal material interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. The second substrate includes an alignment controlling protrusion(206) and a light shielding layer(205). The alignment controlling protrusion is formed by forming a conductive layer, forming an insulating layer on the conductive layer, and pattern-etching the insulating layer. The light shielding layer is formed by pattern-etching the conductive layer by using the alignment controlling protrusion as a mask.
