A method and an apparatus for decoding a paging message in a wireless communication system are provided to minimize power consumption of a terminal in a sleep state, thereby lengthening the life span of an internal battery. Only the first burst among four bursts of a transmitted paging message is received and equalized(S113,S115). The equalized first burst and a reference paging message are compared(S117). The comparison value and a threshold value are compared(S119). It is determined whether to receive the second to the fourth burst of the paging message based on the compared result(S127).
