The method involves adjusting an opening of an exhaust gas recirculation valve (10) according to a value representative of nitrogen oxide emission rate, which is measured in an exhaust circuit (4) of an internal combustion engine (1). The exhaust gas recirculation valve is inserted in a bypass (6) extended between the exhaust circuit and intake circuit (2) of the internal combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing an exhaust gas recirculation valve opening control method.
