A device for preventing operation of a start motor during start of an engine and a control method thereof are provided to prevent damage to a start motor and improve convenience by sensing the rotation of an engine when the engine has started, so that the engine is not operated although a driver turns a start key. A device for preventing operation of a start motor during start of an engine includes a start motor(1), an engine rotation sensor(2), a controller(3), a relay unit(4), and an alarm sound driver(5). The start motor is rotated according to the application of power to start the engine. The engine rotation sensor detects the rotation number of the engine and outputs a corresponding detection signal. The controller compares the rotation number of the engine detected by the engine rotation sensor with a reference value and outputs a corresponding control signal. The relay unit supplies and stops a drive power of the start motor according to the control signal from the controller. The alarm sound driver generates an alarm sound according to the control signal from the controller.
