An apparatus and a method for processing an image, a program for running the method, and a recording medium storing the program are provided to accurately detect the characteristics of an image. A profiler processor(321) detects edge direction, reliability, and contrast intensity of an input image, and sets weight_flat, weight_texture, and weight_edge based on the detected result. An enhancer processor(23) generates a first composite image by compounding the input image and a flat filter-processed image by using a weight value based on the weight_flat. The enhancer processor(23) generates a second composite image by compounding the first composite image and a texture filter-processed image by using a weight value based on the weight_texture. The enhancer processor(23) generates a third image by compounding the second composite image and an edge filter-processed image by using the weight_edge.
