<p>An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a projector comprising the same are provided to suppress the reduction of aperture ratio due to a light shielding layer, by constituting an upper substrate of the LCD through only transparent layers without using the light shielding layer. A plurality of data lines(6a) and a plurality of gate lines(3a) cross each other. Switching elements(30) are formed at crossing portions of the data lines and the gate lines. Pixel electrodes(9) are connected to the switching elements. Pixels are constituted correspondingly to the pixel electrodes. An image display area is composed of pixels. A first substrate(10) has at least the switching elements. A second substrate(20) faces the first substrate. A liquid crystal layer is interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. The light incident through the first substrate is modulated by the liquid crystal layer. A light shielding layer(11a) is formed on a light incident side of at least the switching elements of the first substrate. A portion corresponding to at least the image display area of the second substrate is composed of only transparent layers, which transmit the light incident to the liquid crystal.</p> |
