METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR RANGING IN A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A ranging method and system in a communication system are provided to increase use efficiency of resources by transmitting channel state information to a base station by using a ranging code, allocating resources according to the transmitted channel state information, and performing ranging. An MS(Mobile Station) measures a DL(downlink) channel state with a BS(Base Station) that manages a cell in which the MS is located(301) and compares the measured channel state and a threshold value preset by a user(303). When the measured channel state is smaller than the threshold value, the MS selects a general ranging code(307). When the measured channel state is greater than the threshold value, the MS selects an MCS(Modulation and Coding Scheme) ranging code(305). The MS transmits a ranging code message including the ranging code information to the BS(309), receives a ranging response(RNG-RSP) from the BS, and performs a ranging operation(311).
