A non-emission type display device is provided to improve the contrast ratio without change of brightness, by controlling turning-on time and turning-off time of a light source unit through readout of an input image signal and adjusting the input image signal according to the readout result. A light source unit applies light to a plurality of pixels, wherein the light has a brightness set according to gray distribution of an input image signal. An illumination controller(650) generates a control signal having a duty ratio determined according to the gray distribution of the input image signal, and supplies the control signal to the light source unit. The illumination controller converts the input image signal into an output image signal according to the duty ratio, and supplies the output image signal to a data driving part. The data driving unit converts the output image signal into an analog data voltage according to brightness of the light source unit, and applies the analog data voltage to the pixels.
