An apparatus and a method for processing an image, a program for running the method, and a recording medium storing the program are provided to suppress the deterioration of picture due to emphasis of noise or deterioration of contrast. A flat intensity information generator(53) and an edge intensity information generator respectively detect a flat intensity and an edge intensity of an input image, based on a distribution of contrast intensity of the input image. A flat adaptation compound processor(82) compounds the input image and a flat image by using a weight value based on the flat intensity. The flat image is obtained by reducing a predetermined frequency component of the input image through a flat filter processor(81). An edge intensity compound processor(84) compounds the input image and a predetermined image by using a weight value based on the edge intensity. The predetermined image is obtained by emphasizing an edge of the image compounded by the flat adaptation compound processor through an edge filter processor(83).
