A data processing system including a hardware polling processor is provided to reduce power consumption generated during a state reading operation by making the hardware polling processor perform the reading operation instead of a CPU when a long processing time is required. A peripheral(300) performs the operation requested from the CPU(100). A clock/power controller(200) supplies a clock signal to the CPU. The hardware polling processor(400) detects state data output from the peripheral during the reading of the peripheral, and controls the clock/power controller to block the clock signal supplied to the CPU depending on a detection result. The hardware polling processor performs the reading of the peripheral while the clock signal supplied to the CPU is blocked. When the state data output from the peripheral indicates a standby state, the hardware polling processor enables the clock/power controller to supply the clock signal to the CPU.
