Provided is a composition comprising an extract of Houttuynia cordata showing the anti-cancer effect by inducing apoptosis so as to be usefully used for preventing and treating cancer diseases. The pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating cancer comprises a crude extract of Houttuynia cordata as an effective ingredient, which is prepared from a polar solvent selected from the group consisting of water, methanol, ethanol and a mixture thereof and a non-polar solvent selected from the group consisting of hexane and methylene chloride. The cancer is cervical cancer, lung cancer, pancreas cancer, non-small cell lung carcinomas, liver cancer, colon carcinoma, bone cancer, skin cancer, head cancer, melanoma, uterine carcinoma, ovarian cancer, rectal cancer, stomach cancer, anal cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, carcinoma of the fallopian tubes, endometrial cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, Hodgkin's disease, esophageal cancer, small intestine cancer, ductless gland cancer, thyroid cancer, parathyroid gland cancer, prostatic carcinoma, bladder cancer or kidney cancer.
