PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet printer which can suppress an amount of ink consumption caused by a manual cleaning executed by an erroneous operation in the inkjet printer that forms an image by making ink adhere to a printing medium, and to provide its controlling method. SOLUTION: In such a case that a predetermined time is passed after a test printing of the previous time when a next manual cleaning indication is received, a cleaning controlling part 306 judges that the received manual cleaning indication is an indication caused by the erroneous operation, and carries out a flushing operation smaller in the amount of ink consumption than the ink suction.
