The invention relates to a portable electronic device comprising an interface for accessing a chip card from an external device, a chip card reader, a non-volatile electronic memory for storing authentication data and a user's biometric reference data, a sensor for detecting a biometric feature of said user, means for verifying the biometric feature and accessing the electronic memory to transmit the authentication data to the chip card via the chip card reader if verification of the biometric feature has been successful in order to clear the chip cards to access the external device, input means for inputting the authentication data into the non-volatile memory and initiating detection of the biometric reference data with the aid of the sensor in order to store the same in the non-volatile memory.
