<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which is simple and adequate in structure, and carries out high-resolution control. <P>SOLUTION: The printer comprises: a rotary encoder 36 having a rotary scale 34 for forming marks at predetermined intervals, and a detecting section 35 for detecting the marks and outputting predetermined signals; a PF motor 5 controlled based on the signals from the rotary encoder 36; and a control section 37 for calculating a rotational speed and a rotational position of the PF motor 5, and carrying out predetermined control. The detecting section 35 is provided with a plurality of light receiving elements, and a signal generating means for receiving detecting signals from the light receiving elements, and generating rectangular-wave control signals each changing at a cycle 1/2 that of the detecting signal.
