A radio transmitter (1) controls, in accordance with a number of data streams to be transmitted, the number of transport beams to be formed for transmitting the data streams, while a radio receiver (2) selects and receives at least one of the transport beams. Thus, the number of transport beams to be formed (the number of transmission source beams selectable at the receiving end) is changed in accordance with the number of data streams to be transmitted, thereby achieving both a high throughput characteristic because of a low inter-beam correlation during a multi-stream transmission and a large directivity gain during a single stream transmission.
