PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical unit capable of attaining both high brightness and high contrast, and the miniaturization of the unit, and to provide a projection display device using the optical unit. SOLUTION: A variable diaphragm for shielding light emitted from a light source and adjusting the light quantity of the emitted light is arranged between a first lens array for dividing the light from the light source into a plurality of luminous fluxes and a second lens array for superposing a plurality of secondary light source images formed by the first lens array in an area to be illuminated.
