PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method for an aluminum base material and an aluminum alloy base material capable of imparting corrosion resistance equal to or higher than that by chromate treatment with a treating solution not containing chromium, improving the adhesion with a coating film and also capable of sufficiently realizing the brightness of aluminum, and to provide a coated article with metallic luster on the surface coated by this coating method. SOLUTION: In this coating method for an aluminum base material and an aluminum alloy base material, an aluminum base material or an aluminum alloy base material is treated with an acidic solution of pH 0.6-2.0 containing 0.2-0.4 g/L ferric ions and sulfuric acid, and then subjected to chemical treatment with an acidic coating film chemically treating agent of pH 1.5-4.0 containing 0.01-0.125 g/L zirconium ions or titanium ions, 0.01-1.0 g/L phosphoric ions and 0.01-0.5 g/L fluorine ions, and afterthat, coating is executed.
