The invention relates to an electrode (35) for discharge lamps containing a metallic vapour. Said electrode consists of a high melting, electroconductive material, preferably wolfram or a material predominantly containing wolfram. The inventive electrode comprises a shaft (36) provided with a rod-type head part (37) defining a longitudinal axis L. At least one borehole (39) is arranged in the region of the head part (37), essentially transversally to the longitudinal axis, especially at an angle of between 60 and 90°.
