The device has an arrangement for starting a rolling up of a web origin of a material web (1) by a sleeve reel (2). The arrangement has a guide roller (3) and a mechanism for pressing the material web to the guide roller. The mechanism is designed as a tape swing (16) with tapes (6) that are pressed against a lateral surface of the guide roller. A position of the mechanism is adjustable according to an attained position of the web origin of the material web and/or sag of the material web in a region before the guide roller. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting a rolling up of a material web that is rolled on a sleeve reel.
