PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly control ignition timing while suppressing the deterioration of knocking determining accuracy when there is a great difference between a determination value for determining the presence/absence of knocking and the strength of vibration actually generated in an engine. SOLUTION: An engine ECU implements a program which includes a step (S304) of setting a value which is obtained by adding a product of standard deviationσand a coefficient U(3) to a maximum value V(MAX) for a strength value LOG(V), as the determination value V(KX), when an absolute value for a difference between the determination value V(KX) used for determining the presence/absence of knocking and the maximum value V(MAX) for the strength value LOG(V) which is obtained by converting strength V detected on the basis a signal transmitted from a knock sensor into a logarithm is greater than the product of the standard deviationσand the coefficient U(3) in frequency distribution of the strength LOG(V) in N-cycles.
