PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably group a plurality of focus detection areas so that a focus detection area where a different subject is captured is not included in the same group even if photographic conditions change when focus detection is performed in the plurality of focus detection areas. SOLUTION: The present invention is applied to a focus detecting device which detects a plurality of focus adjustment states of a photographic lens in the plurality of focus detection areas of a field. Variance among the plurality of focus adjustment states is found, the plurality of focus adjustment states are divided into a plurality of groups based upon the variance, and a group is selected out of the plurality of groups to determine a final focus adjustment state based upon the focus adjustment state belonging to the selected group.
