PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine with a bobbin thread winder, which is capable of safely and appropriately winding a bobbin thread without detaching a bobbin from a hook. SOLUTION: The bobbin thread winder comprises a thread retaining member 48 with a thread retaining base body 48A for retaining a bobbin thread exclusive thread EDS by holding the end of the thread and a thread retaining leaf spring 66 made of a resilient body and a retaining force intensifying means with an abutment body 203 abutting on the thread retaining leaf spring 66 when the end of the thread retaining member 48 approaches above the bobbin 22. When the distal end of the thread retaining member 48 approaches above the bobbin during the thread winding motion, the thread retaining leaf spring 66 abuts to the abutment body 203 and strongly energizes the thread retaining leaf spring 66 toward the thread retaining base body 48A to intensify the retaining force of the bobbin thread exclusive thread EDS by the thread retaining member 48.
